Background

A data center functions as the brains and engines of the internet. Its purpose revolves around activities such as data storage, processing, and distribution, catering to a variety of online services and software. These centers play a vital role in supporting businesses and technologies, spanning tasks from web hosting to advanced data processing and so on. Data centers houses a multitude of sensitive electronic equipment’s such as servers, routers and storage devices.

In this blog, we will be focusing on servers in these data centers. The operational activity of this equipment generates substantial heat, making it important to keep the temperature levels of the equipment within an optimal range. To ensure no/minimal overheating occurs, it will be necessary to place external sensors on the server racks for staff to monitor these servers (MWI can help with this!) Thus, let’s quickly take a look at why it is important for data centers to use temperature monitoring systems for their servers.

Reasons for Data Center to do server temperature monitoring

Reduce Chances of Downtime

The fear of any data center experiencing downtime is everyone’s nightmare. Such downtime affects both data center operators and individual’s browsing the site. Equipment failures and downtimes are caused by equipment overheating, leading to service disruptions and potential financial losses for the data center. This is why temperature monitoring is important as it enables data center staff to identify temperature anomalies or trends that might lead to overheating. Thus, this allows for proactive action to be taken to reduce the chances of any failures and downtime.

Alert Notifications

A temperature monitoring system can be set up to send alert notifications when temperature thresholds of the equipment’s are breached. This enables data center personnel to promptly address potential issues and implement corrective measures before problems escalate into severe failures.

Equipment Reliability and Performance

Data centers heavily depend on the smooth operation of their equipment with minimal issues. The servers must maintain efficient performance, even when exposed to high temperatures. Implementing temperature monitoring systems help ensure optimal equipment functioning and minimizes instances of extreme heat and overheating by promptly alerting staff for necessary interventions. By maintaining suitable temperature ranges, the potential for failures and shortened lifespans due to overheating is significantly reduced.

Real Time Monitoring and Troubleshooting

Temperature monitoring systems provide live data monitoring and analytics, enabling data center staff to swiftly make informed decisions. This real time monitoring also helps in the process of identifying and resolving issues. For instance, after troubleshooting to address the cause of high server temperatures, staff can continuously monitor the servers to detect any subsequent temperature increases, which could indicate that the problem has not been completely resolved.

Conclusion

With these reasons, the adoption of temperature monitoring systems in data centers is crucial. These systems play a vital role in maintaining optimal temperature conditions and preventing server failures to ensure the seamless functioning of the data center itself.
